Mannheim Reggae Festival

Even though the bill of the next edition of the Mannheim (GER) Reggae Festival put up by Deebuzz isn´t as seen. as the last one was, the event is still well worth a visit as Buzzin Bashment, Sentinel and Deebuzz Sound will be a nice bashment counterpart to the rather “irie” live-acts.

JLP 31: PNP 29

Tuesday, September 4th, 2007

For the first time in 18 years, it looks like the Jamaican Labour Party (JLP) won the island´s General Elections to take over power from Portia Simpson´s People´s National Party (PNP).
However, as the race has been very close, the official result is not expected to be published before the end of the week.
In what was already called his victory speech, the leader of the JLP, Bruce Golding, told the Jamaican Gleaner his interpretation of the result:

It may very well be that the people of Jamaica, in their own profound wisdom, are sending a clear message to all of us that the time has come for constructive engagement among the political forces of the country”.

Word, Mr. Golding.

London Calling

Tuesday, September 4th, 2007

Long before them people from Vice Magazine could call Dancehall the new punk rock, The Clash mixed up British and Jamaican musical influences and created their very own one-drop-soaked version of the no-future sound.
More than 30 years after their first live appearance and four years after his Joe Strummer´s death, director Julian Temple draws an incredible portrait of The Clash´s lead-singer. Strictly recommended.

P.S. Also check the cover-version of the Clash´s “Guns of Brixton” performed by German punk-rockers Die Toten Hosen and Reggae-superstar Gentleman at YouTube.
